Scott Yoo Appointed Music Director of OFUNAM

International conductor Scott Yoo has been appointed as Music Director of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (OFUNAM) in Mexico-City. The orchestra, founded in 1929, is widely considered one of the leading symphony orchestras of Latin America. Scott Yoo will begin his term on January 1st, 2027.

Yoo, who will continue to serve as Music Director of the Mozaic Festival, the major classical music festival of Central California, has worked in Mexico before, during his time at the helm of the Mexico-City Philharmonic Orchestra 2016-2026. He has been a regular guest conductor with OFUNAM.

The OFUNAM has appeared on tours in Europe and regularly performs with some of the leading international soloists, including Daniil Trifonov, Leonidas Kavakos, Augustin Hadelich, Gil Shaham, Steven Isserlis, Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider and Ute Lemper.

Scott Yoo has conducted the Colorado, Dallas, Indianapolis, Minnesota, New World, San Francisco and Utah Symphonies, and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra in their Elliott Carter Festival and in his Carnegie Hall debut. In Europe, he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, English Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, and the Estonian National Symphony. In Asia, Mr. Yoo has led the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo and the Seoul Philharmonic and Busan Philharmonic in Korea. Mr. Yoo also conducted the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra in recordings for Sony Classical. His discography includes over 20 recordings on Bridge, Naxos, New World, and Sony Classical.

Scott is also the Host and Executive Producer of the PBS series Now Hear This, the first classical music show on American prime time TV in 50 years. This popular programme, which received Emmy nominations in 2021 and 2024, reveals the histories of some of the greatest music ever written.
