Waldman Conducts Dialogues des Carmélites

Débora Waldman had a tremendous success conducting her first production at Opéra de Marseille: Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, in a new, sober stageing directed by Louis Désiré. Critics have been raving at the ‘precise yet flexible mastery’ (ForumOpera) with which Ms Waldman led the production: “She made apparent the tribute Poulenc wanted to pay to Debussy and to Mussorgsky, making the Sprechgesang sing and the dissonances ominous of climatic changes shimmer, with an orchestral rendition that neared perfection.” (ForumOpera)

Delicate and powerful at the same time, of a relentless force - which is the more stunning as one discovers, when she eventually appears on stage to receive well-deserved ovations, what an asthenic person she actually is.

“The music director of the Orchestre national d’Avignon-Provence managed to balance perfectly the delicate equilibrium between pit and stage, allowing the listener to feel most deeply the sincerity, both simple and powerful, of a score that is unique in its kind. Excellent work,” commented Résonances lyriques.
